About Us

Business Alignment Strategies enables first responder clients to maximize their performance by removing or mitigating obstacles that prevent them from achieving their mission.

Assume that the maximum sustainable level of performance is 100%. Taking into account both internal and external obstacles and challenges, what is your department’s current performance level? One fire chief estimated his department’s performance at about 50%, which is not unusual. Efforts to reach the 100% level often are stymied by factors such as the inability to communicate the value you provide to your community; inadequate resources to do your job properly; antiquated technology; politicians and administrators who make uninformed resource allocation decisions; inefficient use of resources; lack of a clearly articulated strategy; labor-management conflict; and time spent on human resource issues that arise from a lack of supervisory skills training for supervisors, unclear boundaries, missing or ineffective accountability mechanisms, and/or a mismatch between individuals’ talents and their job requirements.

Do any of these factors resonate with you?

At Business Alignment Strategies we focus on removing or reducing the impediments that prevent your agency from maximizing its performance. How we do that depends on the situations, challenges, and opportunities you face. For example, some agencies are doing well but want to improve. Others are facing new challenges (e.g., consolidation, severe budget constraints, competition from the private sector, desire to market the value they provide, Affordable Care Act-imposed regulations) and need some direction or other assistance to address them. Still others have recurring problems that require permanent solutions. Thus the “how” may take the form of consulting, training, coaching, speaking, or even mediating.

Here’s how we work with prospective clients. First we meet with you to discuss your needs and determine whether we are the right fit. There is no fee for this consultation. If we believe we can help improve your condition, we customize a proposal that contains specific objectives, measures, and options of how we may work together to achieve the desired outcomes. A key characteristic of our business is the use of value-based fees, which ensures that our interests are aligned with yours (i.e., to complete the engagement as agreed as quickly as possible) and that you receive an excellent return on your investment.

Bio

Dr. Pat Lynch helps first responder clients maximize their performance by removing or mitigating obstacles that prevent them from achieving their mission. She is President of Business Alignment Strategies, Inc., a process consulting firm in Long Beach, California.

After twenty years of consulting with leaders of organizations in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, Pat decided to make first responder agencies a priority in her business because she doesn’t like what she sees happening in the public safety arena across the country. That is, responsible levels of public safety are being threatened due to ill-advised and uninformed decisions about resource allocation. Drawing upon her years of working with public safety agencies such as the Los Angeles Fire Department and Long Beach Fire Department, her varied work experience (e.g., finance and economics, arbitration and mediation, management), her academic background (as a university professor in labor relations, human resources, and organizational behavior), her point of view as a stakeholder in the public safety agencies in her own city, and her volunteer work in emergency services (as a member of the Long Beach Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team), Pat brings a unique perspective to first responder agencies.

Pat earned a B.A. in Sociology, an MBA in Economics, and a Ph.D. in Personnel and Employment Relations. One little-known fact about Pat is that as of 2013 she has walked eight marathons and over a dozen half marathons to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
